City Council E-News

Wondering what happened at the February 2026 Otsego City Council meetings? We’ve got the highlights for you. From Fire Department staffing updates and the Lily Pond Renovation Project to commission appointments and 2026 water and sewer rates, this newsletter covers the key points—all in one convenient place.

Let’s dive in!

Highlights
1.  Fire Department Staffing The City Council approved job descriptions for Fire Captain and Part-Time Firefighter positions. Interim Chief Scott presented the recommendation to proceed with hiring earlier than previously anticipated to accommodate remaining department development work. The City Council also discussed the financial impacts of the hiring timeline shift. Recruitments for these positions will begin in March!  (View the City Council discussion beginning at 29:00)

2.  Lily Pond Renovation Project  The playground equipment at Lily Pond Park, built in 2005, has reached the end of its useful life. To plan ahead, the City is taking a comprehensive approach—updating the playground along with other park improvements at the same time to reduce long-term costs and future disruptions. The City Council approved the plans and authorized the project to move forward to bidding. (View the City Council discussion beginning at 2:37)

3.  Commission Appointments  The City’s four Advisory Commissions—Planning, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety, and Heritage Preservation—had seats expire on February 28, 2026. Following an application period and interviews conducted on February 12, the City Council has approved new appointments. Learn more about the City's Advisory Commissions

4.  2026 Water and Sewer Rates  The City’s annual utility rate review ensures water and sewer fees support operations, capital improvements, and long-term needs for approximately 5,797 customers. Proposed 2026 rates align with prior Utility Rate Studies and were recommended by the Administrative and Public Works Subcommittees for City Council consideration. The new rates will be reflected in the March 2026 bills.
