this Week…
My water is colored/yellow what can I do?
The City of Otsego’s water originates from deep water aquifers, several hundred feet deep. Well water is typically high in dissolved minerals; iron is our most predominant mineral with orange color variations and soft flakey texture. Hydrant flushing, location of your home and what is happening around you could affect the water in your home. If you are on a Cul de sac, at the end of a water line, have construction going on near you, or if you have been on vacation or leave for the winter, all of these things could affect the color of your water.
The best way to remove the color is to do the following:
- Run cold water for five minutes or until the water runs clean.
- If hot water is colored, run your hot water for five minutes or until water runs clear. If it does not clear up, you may need to service your hot water heater. The interior of your water heater can deteriorate due to mineral buildup, leading to rust and sediment in the water heater. Follow your owner’s manual for flushing recommendations.
- Replace whole home filters, water filters or iron filters if need be.
